The Fuel you put in your body will make you sick
or well.
When I say DIET I don't mean some spartan
regime so that you can lose some fat. I mean
the food you eat to stay well and healthy for the rest of your life. There
are so many crazy diets out there that it boggles the mind... and the
weight loss pills! Amazing!
I have found out my metabolic type, which
is one of the more popular diet modes right now. I found out I was a
mixed type, which is a blessing. I can eat anything healthy and it will
do me good. I skip processed food and dairy,
skip liquor, caffeine, soy products, grains and starchy vegetables most
of the time. So that leaves lots of fruits and veggies, a little
chicken and fish, eggs, some nuts, as much as possible raw foods.
I was a vegan last year but now I have added
in some more protein because I couldn't seem to gain weight on the
vegan diet. I'm not looking to food for excitement or gratification.
I want good fuel for my engine with minimal prep time. I
want my food to taste good but food is a pretty minimal stimulus in
my life. Sure, I get tempted when someone eats ice-cream in
front of me but I know how sick I would feel if I ate one of those
cones. Do you remember the cones we had as kids? The ones they give
you now would have satisfied my whole family.
I try to stay out
of the market as much as possible. Then I heed that advice
about going around the edge of the market where all the real food
is, and avoiding the middle which is full of processed junk. I also
am lucky enough to live alone so I don't have to worry about satisfying
anyone else's dietary needs. I know how hard that can be from the
visits to my family.
I avoid the three
whites - milk, white flour and sugar. That's a good tip. They
all make you sick. You can find backup for all these preferences on
Dr Mercola's site. He has all the references and scientific information
that you need to prove anything to anyone. He's on the Resources
page. I don't bother much about proving anything to people. They either
will want to try something or not and if they try it they will find
out for themselves.
I eat the good fats
with a good balance of omega 3 and omega 6; fish oil, coconut oil, mac-nut
oil, hemp oil. I also eat butter occasionally but never eat margerine
or highly processed oils.
One of the most important things to remember
is that we are all tubes and the food has to move through freely without
getting stuck. So many people have poor elimination habits for years
and are being poisoned by their waste products. Extra magnesium takes
care of that problem. Dr Linus Pauling said that minerals were the basic
necessities of life, not vitamins, and most Americans don't get enough
for vibrant health. I really agree with that. I've started taking some
angstrom liquid minerals. They are a very good way to get more minerals
in your diet. You can google them.
I'm thinking that everyone must know all
this stuff already. But when I do hit the market and see some people's
carts then I realize it must not be general knowledge. I must say I
wasn't surprised when that low-fat craze turned Americans obese in
the last five years. It's not fat that makes
you fat, it's starchy and sugary processed carbohydrates.
I'm also not saying I'm the expert here.
I'm just synthesizing what has worked for me out of all the hundreds
of things I have tried. My mother calls me gullible. I think I'm a persistent
optimist. I know there is a solution for every problem out there somewhere
and I intend to find it. I do know that there
are some wonderfully healthy old people amongst the generally sick and
I'm determined to be one of them. At present I am not too addicted,
I am underweight and healthier than most people my age. I'm also not
obsessive about diet. If I go to someone's house I eat what they are
serving, no matter what it is. But if my stay with people on the Average
American Diet is more than three days, I get sugar addicted again and
it takes me a week to recover.
Food addictions and allergies are two sides
of the same coin. What we are allergic to we
are addicted to. Sugar was my addiction since I was a child
and, while I have it under control for the most part, I am aware it
could sneak back into my life anytime if I let it. I
wish all the poor people who are addicted to sugar and carbohydrates
could realize that it is as severe an addiction as alcoholism, then
perhaps they would take it more seriously.
I have taken all kinds of supplements since
the 70's. I'm still not sure if they are helping or not. But it's like
insurance, and aren't some of those ads convincing? Some of that pseudo-science
miraculous malarkey just gets me salivating. I can't wait to reach for
my credit card. I have actually sworn off all superfluous supplements
since I took the Yuen healing class. Dr Yuen used to take 40 vitamin
and herb pills a day and now he realizes he doesn't need most of them.
I have been taking
wheatgrass off and on for years and I really believe that is good
for me. My first online business was the wheatgrass sprouter
site. Wheatgrass juice has saved and improved many lives, I know
that personally. That's because it is a whole food, not an herb or
a drug.
There's a really good test I do if I am uncertain
whether to eat something. I ask my Inner Wisdom
if this would benefit my wellness or not, if it would make me stronger
or weaker. One way to do this is to hold the item next to your
heart as you ask. I find I will sway forward if it is a yes and backward
if it is a NO! The answer is usually quick and clear, although sometimes
not what I want to hear.
I find that eating for my taste buds sake
is too expensive in terms of my health. I do it as little as possible
and I know when I'm doing it. I even talk to my taste buds once in a
while, and tell them why I can't give them what they want and see if
they'll settle for something else. That part of me is so young it can't
even understand living to a ripe old age.
So, that's it for now on the subject of
diet. You'll find lots of links on the Resources
page to explore further.
